A Bit of Colored Ribbon is the second book in the Armstrong Family trilogy. The grandson of George Armstrong has followed his family's legacy in working for the Underground Railroad. In aiding the escapees, he meets Nat, an escaped slave from Alabama.. Discovered by slave catchers, Nat and Marcus escape to a Union Army camp in Mansfield, Ohio. From this camp they join the campaign with the 65th Ohio Volunteer Regiment, bringing Nat back to the farm in Alabama. Through his journey, Nat carries with him a strand of yellow ribbon, a token from his love, Emma, who has found freedom in Ohio. This symbol of fidelity is ultimately placed in the hands of a Union soldier.
