When a single foreign word from the past begins to haunt the mind of Leo Mathis, worry begins to sink into his life. At first he shrugs it off as a strange hiccup in his memories, but after a hike in the mountains with his soon to be wife, Maddy, leads to something sinister and related to the memory, it becomes clear something is afoot. As the paths of mentors from the past intertwine with lives of the present it becomes clear that a possibility of an immensely bleak future may be in store for not just them, but the world.
