At the end of book one, the members of the community were finally feeling secure as the plans they made are now complete and they are living securely behind their newly constructed wall. They've got food, water, shelter, and enough guns to protect them from just about everything. All seems to be going well until Frank contacts them from Ohio to let them know they've been attacked and had to flee from his farm. Justin and his team leave the safety of the community and head towards Toledo to save Frank and his people. Even though they have a solid plan, things go wrong. Ziggy is wounded, Parka is missing, and Captain Roberts has become too big a threat to ignore. A trip to Frank's farm to deal with him one last time becomes a priority. Back at the school work has begun to make room for more people, and a trip to Port Huron and new friendships made there put them directly in the path of a motorcycle gang that wants to take everything for themselves. Soon the attacks against them begin. Jessica and Gary will lead their team as they fight to keep everything they've worked for and built without Justin and his team of trained men.
