Private Detective Stories first appeared in June of 1937, about three years after the first of
the spicy magazine titles, Spicy Detective. As it turns out Private Detective Stories and
Spicy Detective were published by the Trojan Publishing Company. The two periodicals were
cut from the same cloth. It has been said that "Private Detective Stories was Spicy
Detective with less decorative covers and some, but not much, of the psychopathology left
out". Private Detective Stories ran for 13 years and ultimately published 134 issues.
