Gerald Harbaugh was railroad mechanic from the railroad town of Crewe, Va. When World War II erupted, he volunteered for the U.S. Army only to discover the Army needed experienced railroad men to move Lend Lease supplies across Iran to Russia then desperately fighting Nazi Germany. Harbaugh was assigned to Company A, 754th Railway Shop Battalion, 3rd Military Railway Service of the Persian Gulf Command.
