"The Lost Year" describes the year 2020 that was lost because the world was shut down by the Coronavirus. Mr. Steve, a teacher at East Palo Alto Charter School, takes the children on a journey informing them of some of the changes that have to be made to keep the children safe. This includes not being able to attend school and sheltering-in-place at home away from their friends. One student, Jonah, finds it hard to deal with not being able to attend school and visits with his friends. Mr. Steve notices that Jonah has taken the sheltering-in-place mandate to heart and tries to uplift his spirits by making Jonah his personal helper. Mr. Steve and Jonah come up with ways to engage the students with activities, schoolwork and exercises, while having to stay at home and making the best of a bad situation. The elementary school students get a better understanding of the new schooling landscape and what they have to do to contribute as a child. They soon find out a new way of living that can also be fun and uplifting as they realize that the pandemic is filled with surprises. They also see how their real life heroes join in to encourage them on their journey back to being normal again.
