This is, we suppose, the largest collection of Legal Maxims ever attempted. As they are alphabetically arranged, and the book supplemented by an Index (which by the way might be fuller), it will be a useful addition to a library and for occasional reference. We are inclined to think it would be well for students to become more familiar with them, and to impress them upon their minds for reference in after years. We cannot therefore agree with a contemporary that does not appreciate the "raison d'être" of its publication. The collection contains 2882 maxims culled from various sources; we certainly admit our utter ignorance until now, that there were so many in existence. This book does not pretend to be more than a compilation, but it is a very perfect one, and we should not expect anything else from the author of the "Law of Literature." -The Canada Law Journal, Vol. 15 [1879]
