This volume documents two German-Russian conferences that took place in 2002 and 2003 in Gottingen, Germany and Moscow, Russia. Their topic was the Imaginarium of power, described as the imaginary and real images that formed a representation of power of multiple cultures (Byzantine, Occidental, Russian) during the Middle Ages, Early Modern, and Modern times. Historians, Byzantine scholars, and art historians from both countries took part in the conferences. Eight contributions deal with all major periods of Russian history, including the Kievan Rus', the rule of Moscow by tsars, the St. Petersburg Empire, and the Soviet era. Of particular interest is the Russian view of western history, as well as the German perspective of Russian history. German text.
