Born in 1934 in Dresden, Germany, the son of Lutheran missionaries to India, Theo Lehmann lived through both the Nazi era and the Communist-ruled German Democratic Republic (GDR). Following in the footsteps of his godly father, who after World War II had been a professor of missiology at Halle University, the younger Lehmann studied theology at Leipzig University and received a doctor of theology degree from Halle, with a dissertation on Negro spirituals.
