Chicken wings were originally the part of the chicken that was thrown away or only reserved for stock or soup. The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York was owned by Frank and Teressa Bellissimo in the 1960's. On March 4, 1964, their son, Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar when a group of his friends came in. He asked his mother, Teressa to make them something to eat. She decided to deep fry chicken wings and then flavor them with a secret hot sauce which is still kept a secret to this day.
This is the story of how Buffalo chicken wings were invented and the famous Buffalo wing sauce flavor. There have been some other stories by other people who claim that they invented chicken wings and the Buffalo flavor sauce.
Today, the flavor of Buffalo sauce is associated with Frank's Hot Sauce, but the owners of the Anchor Bar still have their own recipe that you can buy at their restaurant or online.
There are other retailers and restaurants that are famous for their own brand of Buffalo wing sauce including Hooters, Sweet Baby Rays and Fridays. This flavor is very distinctive and can be used in many dishes besides chicken wings. It can also be used in dishes such as pizza, nachos and lasagna.
This cookbook explores the variety of ways to use Buffalo wing sauce besides on chicken wings.
