Aean and Sara did the impossible by making the world of Mer whole again. Now, their youngest son, Saraean, is tasked with traveling Mer to unite those with magic and or mystic gift under a code of conduct similar to what the young monarchs had done with the nobility. But, soon after leaving Merid Lo, Saraean is bound three times to the beautiful Jenea who was about to be burned as a witch. But that's just the start as the young couple and their companions discover a strange phenomenon that makes people act on their basest thoughts or feelings with the common sense constraints that usually occur. People are being killed by angry mobs and then the crowd simply walks away as though nothing had happened. Often they don't even know they did anything wrong. Even those with mystic gift are affected by this strange phenomenon causing a world of trouble for the young companions as they make their way across Mer. Is this a new weapon of the Darkening? Or is there some new force at work trying to destroy Mer? And can Saraean and his companions find the answers or is this yet another problem that only Aean and Sara can solve? Complicating matters is a group of beings who were once followers of the Darkening who believe that all the humans have was once theirs, and they want it back.
