In the 19th century, no one suspected that giant reptiles lived on earth for millions of years before the first hominids appeared. So when enormous bones and teeth started to be discovered, wise people did everything to fit the new data into their old conceptions. The Chinese thought they were dragons; the English thought they were mythical Biblical creatures. Little by little, the evidence caught on: there was an era of reptiles, and those creatures came to be known as dinosaurs.
