Book one in The Chose Me Series,
Curly Hair Chose Me
is an easy, rhythmic read about a young girl struggling to embrace her curly hair.
"Why won't my hair lay flat?"
"When I play it always gets frizzy."
She reveals to her mother all the things about her hair she doesn't like. With her mother's help, she discovers just how magnificent curly hair can be. Based on a true story, this book inspires readers and encourages them to love the features that chose them- especially their curly hair.
Encouraging and empowering,
is an ode to loving your naturally curly hair - A perfect gift for special occasions including birthdays, baby showers, holidays and much more!
From the Author
The inspiration behind the character of
comes from my first daughter. She would sit and stare in the mirror, pulling on her hair, brushing it with excess amounts of moisturizer; all to get her hair to be straight and lay flat. She was comparing her hair to the straight hair of many of her friends; and as a biracial child, even the hair of some of her cousins. I saw this as a very important yet delicate moment. A moment to encourage, inspire and affirm her and her natural, beautiful features.
This moment highlighted the importance of representation. I sought books and shows where she could see and relate to characters that looked like her.
As a Black woman and mother to two biracial daughters, I understand the need for diverse representation. Knowing that children are more motivated to read when their own experiences are validated and they are able to resonate with the pages of a book.
I wrote
i
n order to help fill the diverse representation gap in literary media so children, including my own, have more
diverse, multicultural, and inclusive
options.
Filled with an empowering message and page after page of beautiful illustrations,
is a wonderful addition to any home or school library.
