In this Indian drama, a rich, deeply religious man has a telling dream that changes the life of his daughter-in-law. He dreamt that the 17-year-old bride was a Hindu goddess incarnate. The dream was quite strong so he places the young woman on an altar outside his house. When a sickly child appears to be cured by her, the whole town comes to believe that she is indeed a goddess. In time the girl herself comes to believe it. Soon her husband comes home from school. He refuses to believe she is a goddess and demands that she stop it. The woman is torn and afraid that if she obeys him, she will suffer repercussions from on high, so she continues to honor the goddess. At this point the film has two possible endings. In the original ending she dies beside a river upon her husband's return. In the second she tries unsuccessfully to heal her nephew. When she fails, she goes insane.
