In the prologue (1,1-4,16) Mathew explains the roots of Jesus Christ and hence highlights important characteristics of his works. Among his ancestors (1,2-16) he specially focuses on Tamar, Rahab, Rut and Joseph (1,3.52.16). According to the Bible they are merciful and righteous. Here, it becomes clear that Jesus Christ's devotion towards the sick, sinners and starving (4,17 et seq) will fulfil the divine demand for mercy (9,13; 12,7; 23,23). His deeds contradict the behaviour of the three Kings David, Herodes and Archelaos, who proved to be bad "shepherds" of the people and thus hindered the works of the Jewish authorities.
