Recorded between 1954 and 1957, this album features the pre-solo career Wilson attempting to fill the shows of his predecessor, Clyde McPhatter (he of the unique high tenor) to pretty good effect. The songs here are the standard '50s mix of jump blues (verging on rock, like "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down"), Ink Spots-style ballads, and covers of white pop standards ("Tenderly", "Three Coins in the Fountain,"), a la the Platters. The group's harmony vocals are sterling throughout, but the only hint of the more aggressive style Wilson would employ on his own comes on the gospel-derived "Above Jacob's Ladder."
