I have heard from many people that our education system is broken. I completely disagree. The problem with our education system is that it has simply not evolved from the way it was conceived and built. It has not kept pace with our fast changing world. We react instead of being proactive. Times have changed since the days when soon-to-retire traditional, ineffective high school assistant principals were appointed principal of an Alternative Education school so they can say they were a principal before retirement. This also goes for those ineffective teachers the school district did not know what to do with… other than tuck them away at an Alternative school. Why anyone, in their right minds, would send at-risk teachers and administrators to teach our most at-risk students boggles my mind. I know why they do it, but shame on them for doing it. In my mind, that is absolute malpractice. Although most of the policies, statutes and best practices in this book refer to continuation high schools in California, the reader in other parts of the country who are in the educational options or alternative education world may find this book helpful. This could also be helpful for central office administrators who oversee Alternative Education programs and can perhaps generate ideas for their programs.
