This volume deals with the topicality of Erich Maria Remarque's 'militant pacificism' in relation to current issues of peace and cultural politics. In addition to a historical reappraisal of the use of the term 'militant pacifism' by Heinrich Heine, Kurt Tucholsky, Albert Einstein and others, the contributions focus on the involvement of German armed forces in Afghanistan, the role of the media in war reports and questions concerning the cultural-political commitment of communities in peacekeeping and peace education. With contributions by Michael Daxner, Siegfried Hummel, Ian King, Joseph Anton Kruse, Lioba Meyer, Winfried Nachtwei, Heinrich Placke, Jurgen Rose, Dirk Sager, Andreas Schafter, Enne Schmidt and Tilman Westphalen. They are the result of an international conference held by the Erich Maria Remarque Society together with the Kurt Tucholsky Society in November 2008 in Osnabruck. German text.
