English Summary: The city and its surroundings are interconnected in many ways. But the spatial turn that makes us rethink history in its spatial dimension, encourages us to re-examine the perception of urban and peri-urban spaces. The exploration of these spaces is at the heart of this volume, particularly concerned with the evolution of their cartographic representation, the social topography, the processes of inclusion or exclusion and the gradation of the zones of urban influences. The contributions highlight selected cities from Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, including fortress cities and the "little towns", which are often overlooked in this context. Im Fokus stehen u.a. Fragen zur kartographischen Reprasentation, zur Sozialtopographie, zu Inklusions- und Exklusionsprozessen sowie zur unterschiedlich starken Auspragung von Zonen stadtischen Einflusses. In den Beitragen werden ausgewahlte Stadte aus Mittel-, Sud- und Osteuropa beleuchtet, darunter auch Festungsstadte und die in diesem Kontext oft wenig beachteten "kleinen Stadte".
