Stanley Kubrick directed this tale of jealousy and sexual obsession, working with screenwriter Frederic Raphael (Darling) on an adaptation from Arthur Schnitzler's Rhapsody: A Dream Novel (Simon and Schuster, 1927), aka Dream Story (reprinted by Sun & Moon in 1990). Filmed at the reopened Elstree Studios and London locations (the Loughborough Hotel, Madame Jo-Jo's strip club). The story involves two married New York psychiatrists (Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman) who engage in separate affairs with patients (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sydney Pollack), who are also married. Shortly after filming began, Kidman commented, "Nobody's had a nervous breakdown yet. We're five weeks into the shoot, and Stanley has been incredibly generous with us. He's not emotionally abusive or anything. He deals with Tom and me separately -- and when you see the film you'll understand why. When people see the film, they're going to have a field day analyzing our relationship." Kubrick brought in Dr. Clive Froggart as an advisor on the preparation and handling of heroin injections. Froggart is a clinical psychiatrist who gave treatment to drug addicts but then became addicted himself. Some have recalled an incident in the '60s when Kubrick and Terry Southern were watching porn movies, and Kubrick said to Southern, "Wouldn't it be interesting if an artist were to do this with beautiful, first-rate actors and good equipment?"
