For over a year I worked as a telephone-counselor for a national billboard evangelism program. One of the billboards they put on the nation's highways was "Who is Jesus?" My job was to answer the caller's questions with the Bible. Here are some of the things they would say: "Jesus isn't God! He is only the son of God. In fact, aren't we all sons of God?" "Jesus was only a prophet and a good teacher." "Jesus was our ultimate example to follow, but he was just a man." "Jesus IS God! He is the only God and there is no trinity" (or partnership as the Muslims would say). "Jesus is the first created being and is therefore preeminent and before all things." "Jesus is the spiritual brother of Lucifer." "Jesus is the highest created being, preceding the Archangel Michael." "Jesus is the highest ascended master, reincarnated to the highest spiritual plane." All of these and more were thrown at me with a dare to refute them. Understanding who Jesus is allowed me to stand by faith in my Savior and declare salvation in no other. As I said to them, I say to you: Jesus is the foundation of Truth, and knowing Him allows us to discern between good and evil, truth and error. Questioning and doubting His true identity puts us in doubt of our salvation and makes our faith shaky and unstable. Unbelief sets in when we do this and we end up declaring Him to be something other than who He truly is. We must not listen to or agree with anyone who sheds a false light on Christ. Instead, we confront it with the truth of God's Word.
