Loanwords in Italian, in particular in the language of sport, were subject to vehement replacement attempts during fascism (1922–1943). This study examines the relationships between linguistic transformation and puristic intervention by taking an onomasiological, corpus-based approach, throws new light on fascist loanword purism and reveals mechanisms of lexical transformation in Italian (sporting) language.
