George Frederick Warren (1830-1916) was an adventurer, explorer, husband, father and grandfather. Born in Connecticut, when he reached his teens he was apprenticed to a jeweler in New Britain, but left early in order to sail around Cape Horn to the California Gold Rush. After three years he returned to Connecticut, married Julia Calista Stanley and moved to Illinois to farm. He served in the Civil War from 1861-1863, then returned to the farm. In 1872 he went West and in Clay County, Nebraska, claimed land under the Homestead Act. After two brief attempts to find gold in the Black Hills Gold Rush, he returned to Nebraska and spent the rest of his life farming and running a Nursery, encouraging his neighbors to plant trees. When he retired in 1904, he and Julia moved to Harvard, where George created a rental home business. He suffered a stroke in 1912 and lived a quiet life of infirmity until his death in 1916.
