Narration of the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is called 'Hadith'. The Companions kept on narrating hadiths to inform the followers and those followers to their followers about the life and routines of the Messenger of Allah. At that time, writing was not a particularly frequent habit. As a result, the Prophet and his Companions valued oral tradition and memory over written records.
