English summary: In the discourse about China, a country, which according to many observers is characterized by harmony, aspects of conflict are often marginalized. There are social tensions as well as controversies within the Chinese cultural sphere which have been present all along and which have turned out to be (in the ancient world as well as the modern) powerful forces in cultural change as well as social development. Conflict and harmony are not necessarily pitted against each other, however, but often find themselves in a symbiotic relationship to each other and in the interplay between them, freedom and oppression are manifested. In the contested field between conflict and harmony, many cultural and social problems within China can be detected and analyzed. The authors of the fifteen articles in this volume illuminate these issues in the Chinese context from a variety of scholarly disciplines including philosophy, literature, sociology, political science, law, and history.
