'Herbie's Dilemma is a story of post-pubescent maturation, focusing upon the discovery of the potential for human relations and the desire for peer acceptance. The struggle diminishes with time, as Herbie entertains the wonder of sexuality and intellectual achievement. Transitionally, Herbie loses himself in sensual pleasure with diminished concern for societal acceptance. After numerous escapades, he finds acceptance within himself, realizing that he is indeed different. His desire to be accepted by his peers no longer is paramount as he decides that his difference is the most important factor of his life, and he resolves to earnestly try to be himself with no concern about the judgement of others.
