This is the fourth of five volumes which is considered one of the most complete works on the history of Cuba. The collection covers Cuba's entire history, from its aboriginal beginnings and conquest until the year 2000. Volume IV deals with the years between 1959 and 1980: the beginnings of the Revolution and Castro Communist dictatorship. The deception of a democracy never implanted, the long exile of Cubans, the economic destruction of the country and the suppression of all freedoms and rights. Written by a historian who actively participated in much of Cuba's history, before and after 1959. He became a commander in the fight against Batista and very early opposed the totalitarian regime implanted by the Castros. Furthermore, as son-in-law to historian Ramiro Guerra, Duarte had access to many of his archives and dedicated the last years of his life to writing this history, one of the most documented to date.
