Describing the life history of four Ghanaian girls who dropped out of school, Obeng (Indiana U.), examines how traditional beliefs and socio-educational crises influence rural girls' schooling. In addition to attending to the narratives of the young women, she interviewed their parents and teachers in order to investigate the gendered impacts of economic and political crises, as well as strategies that may be employed to rectify the problems and improve girls' education possibilities.
