In the year 2036, a radical new treatment created by Japanese scientists turns the tables on death by incorporating nanomachines into the human genetic makeup. The bots are controlled by a system called S.H.E.L.L., and under their watchful eye, human disease and injury become nonexistent. However, traditional social structures soon begin to crumble, giving way to severe environmental damage, bourgeoisie decadence, and significant economic divides. The fate of humanity ultimately rests with drug addict Youzou Oba and his unusual band of allies.
