In the Benedictine Tradition investigates the transmittal of the Benedictine tradition of love of learning, books, and libraries associated with the order's monasteries in Europe to the United States. M. Dorothy Neuhofer analyses the establishment of the Benedictine Order in the United States and the college libraries that its members began. She clarifies the mission and history of Benedictine Order by reviewing its spread throughout Western Europe as it encouraged a love of learning and the establishment of monastery libraries. She brings together information from surveys of twelve Benedictine college libraries with case studies of the libraries at St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict to examine the origins and early development of these libraries. Neuhofer explores the similarities between these libraries, finding the traditional Benedictine love of learning present in the early work of the order in the United States, through the establishment of these centers of knowledge.
