might sound like a title to attract Game of Thrones fans. It is unclear whether the reference was intended, but the idea of this release by baritone
and the
is unusual and perhaps unique: the musicians focus on operatic figures from the history of northern Europe, from operas by northern composers. Some of the pieces fit only one of these criteria, but it doesn't really matter for
and company, which uncover some obscure material that is well worth hearing. They are pieces for leading baritone roles that do not fit the usual Italian stereotypes of the baritone; all of the characters are full-fledged leading men. The most famous northern composers show up on the program; there are two dances from
's very first opera,
, and an aria from the little-known opera
, and one secular cantata by
, but most of the composers qualify as neglected (
,
) or downright obscure (
). There are two wild excerpts from a satirical
opera called

") that are just about worth the price of admission on their own.
and conductor
make a good case for the inclusion of most of this music in the Baroque operatic repertory, and perhaps stronger singers and musicians will pick it up.
