Elite New York attorney Ronnie Russo (Neil Brown Jr.) receives an unexpected call from his estranged childhood friend, Joey Donovan (Jeremy Sisto), who reveals he is dying from a terminal illness. Consumed by guilt over their tumultuous fallout years ago, Ronnie returns to their quiet Boston suburb to make amends with his friend and fulfill his final wish, to reconnect with his young son.
