Little is known about the life of Lazarus. The Bible only mentions him in two chapters of the Gospel of John. However, we can glean some basic information about him from those brief references. He lived in a small town called Bethany with two sisters named Mary and Martha. When Lazarus died of a sudden illness, Jesus raised him from the dead. That miracle was one of the final factors leading to the crucifixion of Jesus. Although Lazarus is the main character of this book, its primary purpose is to point the reader to Jesus. provides a picture of the life and times of Jesus. It highlights the lack of awareness of who Jesus really was, even by his closest followers. It shows the depth of hatred toward him by the religious leaders of his day. Jesus shares his deepest thoughts with Lazarus and reveals that the only way to become acceptable to God is through him. It is hoped that will encourage readers to spend more time in the Bible, enabling the Holy Spirit to strengthen their faith in Jesus as the Son of God, sent by his Father to grant them forgiveness and eternal life.
