Pour la préparation de ce volume la littérature du sujet m'a offert des ressources abondantes, bien que d'une utili sation souvent difficile. A part, en effet, quelques études fragmentaires ou incomplètes et le fonds historique com mun de l'époque, elle se trouve, monographies, mémoires et publications documentaires même, disséminée' à tra vers d'innombrables recueils périodiques. Je crois n'y avoir rien négligé de quelque peu instructif.
