released just two singles while he was signed to , which makes it quite remarkable that is the fourth collection of recordings for released by / since 2011. didn't intend to release a fourth collection but producers , , and discovered enough worthwhile tapes in the vaults to warrant another entry in their series. proves they weren't wrong. Nearly all of the 24 tracks consist of songs that were largely unheard at the time ("A Man and a Half," which was written for and recorded by , is the exception that proves the rule). Just because the songs weren't released by or recorded by other singers doesn't mean they're leftovers. A studied craftsman, created sturdy Southern soul songs and had the good fortune to have them performed by , who immediately elevated his material. Since these songs are essentially demos, they're loose but they're not ragged; the musicians settle into the groove but don't make it too tight. Much of the pleasure of is listening to the band play. When 's songs are merely good generic soul, -- and, it has to be said, himself -- turn the familiar into something warm and funky, which is why this fourth volume of rarities is welcome. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
