Tun writer of the following pages has endeavoured to make a book which should be both entertaining and useful to the young. It has been 'his aim to adapt his language to the wants of child ren, without becoming childish. For this reason there has been little attempt to come down to the style of the nursery; in the belief that, if children do not under stand sound English, it is time they should learn it. If every hard word is avoided, none but easy words can ever be learned.
The subject and manner, in some let ters, are purposely higher than in others; for it is impossible to suit all capacities.
