The intention, in the plan adopted, waste produce a work which, with respect to refe rence, should possess the utility d a gaze teer, while by connected description it might hear a continuity of perusal. How far we have succeded in this attempt, we must leave to the unerring judgment of the Public 5 we, however, owe it to ourselves to premise that a portion of its imperfections are attributable to accident, a part of the manuscript having been lost on the disastrous march which, as a prisoner of war, we were obliged to make through France at the commencement of the past year, and which we have been only able to supply m a hasty and consequently imper fict manner.
