This book is the memoir of Tu Show-mei, self-styled an Ease-Minded Old Man, about the first 30 years
(1905-1935) of his life. It covers his early education, employment, his participation in the 1st anti-Communists
campaign in Jiangxi in 1929-1930, his escape, and joining the Divison of investigation and Statistics of the
Military Commission in 1935. His narrative sheds much light on military affairs, politics, society, and rural
life of the early years of the Chinese Republican era. The book will be of interest to people interested in
modern China, especially the struggle between the Nationalists and the Communists in the 1920s to 1930s.
