Is Mozart great simply because he's enjoyable or is he enjoyable because he's good for us? Don Campbell, the compiler of these pieces and the author of the book 'The Mozart Effect' says that these views are not just equally true but that one serves to complement the other. But rather than simply appreciate the peaceful and elegiac slow movements that Mr. Campbell has provided here (this is the second volume of three), perhaps we ought to take into serious consideration the conditions under which Mozart wrote the Concerto for Flute and Harp. Who would ever guess that this piece--its Andante is included here--was written when Mozart was dealing with his mother's fatal illness? Once we realize that Mozart was simply incapable of letting stress get in the way of his very-productive career, perhaps we should take the composer's attitude and approach to life as a cue and listen to his music in the spirit with which it was written. But whether we listen to Mozart deliberately for relaxation or to become reacquainted with some of his most memorable melodies, no lover of Mozart can go wrong with this CD.
