The formula for creating a great musical is tried and true and should not be discarded in some ostentatious attempt to be different or overtly "experimental", an all too familiar angle many composers try. Strategies and techniques endure in storytelling and stagecraft for good reason...they work. Nevertheless, innovations in the way a musical is produced are absolutely possible. But it is in the way in which a composer shapes and hand crafts each traditional stage and compositional element of a musical which gives a musical its unique signature, and NOT the re-creating of the wheel by abandoning all previous known stage, theater, and music compositional strategies. There is nothing more challenging than creating an award-winning, great musical. It requires everything you have...so many details...so much to know. And above all, as Stephen Sondheim so wisely pointed out, it is the art of: "Minor details, major decisions."
