On this 2001 recording, veteran tenor saxophonist
Gordon Brisker
shows a much stronger
John Coltrane
influence than usual. His
post-bop
quintet, which also includes trumpeter
Tim Hagans
, pianist
Mike Nock
, bassist
Anthony Cox
, and drummer
Billy Hart
, performs a rather dry set of music comprised of six
Brisker
originals,
Nock
's
"The Open Path,"
an unusual reworking of
"The Meaning of the Blues,"
and a
modal
-oriented
"You Got to My Head."
The musicians all play well, but not a lot of warmth is expressed and
's originals are generally not too memorable. This is easier music to respect than to love. ~ Scott Yanow
