Excerpt from Myles Standish: With an Account of the Exercises of Consecration of the Monument Ground on Captain's Hill, Duxbury, Aug. 17, 1871 Miles was educated to the military profession, and early re ceived a commission as lieutenant in Queen Elizabeth's forces on the Continent, in aid Of the Dutch. He repaired to the Neth erlands, the seat of war, where he remained a short time after peace was declared, but soon joined the English refugees of Levden. He joined the first company Of Pilgrims for America, and on their arrival on the coast was sent out in the command of the shallop with sixteen men, to make discoveries along the Shore. After spending nearly a month in various expeditions, surveying the different bays and channels, he reported in favor of the harbor of Plymouth as a settling point, where the final landing was made. He was soon elected to the chief military command, a position he retained till his death, thirty-six years afterwards. There is, perhaps, no parallel of his military expe ricuce in the early settlement of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
