For centuries civilizations and armies utilized pack transport to move goods and people from point A to point B. With the advent of the gasoline reciprocating engine, the need for this was dramatically reduced...but never eliminated. Despite our best efforts, despite road building and aviation assets, there are still places where it will be cheaper and easier to just pack it in on mules and horses. This has proven itself time and again, from the forest fires of the west to the mountains of Afghanistan. The manual contained herein was one of the last official Army publications to be printed that dealt with managing pack trains and their animals. Only with the SF version in 2004 and 2014 did the Army return to the subject, and then only in a Special Forces context. It represents the cumulative knowledge of almost two hundred years of mule and horse packing in the US military.Modern introduction included at the beginning.
