Excerpt from Proceedings of a National Convention of Railroad Commissioners: Held at the Office of the Interstate Commerce Commission; Washington, D. C., May 28, 29, 1890
But, as I stated a moment ago, the business of all railroad regulation is a difficult one. Have you ever thought for a moment how much more difficult it is in this country than in any other upon the face of the globe?
I hold in my hand a statement Of the railroad mileage Of the world, as nearly as it can be ascertained.* Up to the end of the year 1888 the railways in the United King dom Of Great Britain and Ireland had an aggregate mileage of miles.
There was in Germany a railway mileage Of miles; in Austria and Hungary, in France, In all Europe, in round numbers, miles; in the United States, miles; in all the world, miles.
