During his missionary career he was professor of church history at the two Baptist seminaries in Japan, pioneered numerous new missions, pastored several churches in Tokyo and Fukuoka, held administrative positions in both the mission and the national convention, and served as chancellor of Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka.
