You know you have excess reactivity if you find yourself saying: "I knew I shouldn't have eaten it but I ate it anyway." "I knew I shouldn't have said it but I said it anyway." "I knew it was bad for me but I went and did it anyway." Most of the time, we are reacting too quickly to life (John-Roger). Habits are all-pervasive in human experience because humans learn thru forming habits (Richard Bandler). Unfortunately we also learn to over-react to some things; and, under-react to other things. Unlearning these is the first obstacle everyone works on in personal growth. "Reactivity" is also "liking" and "disliking." We're all learning to moderate our EXCESS liking and EXCESS disliking. It's okay to outgrow unworkable habits and behaviors. If we feel like, "I'm just treading water, going nowhere," perhaps we are devoting too much time to only maintaining our comfort zones. If we do this, we ask, "How come I'm not getting anywhere in my life?" "Reactivity" is invisible, only visible in behavior. "Habit Body" is the more useful term, for purposes of self-awareness and growth. "Habits" connotes flexibility. We can change a habit, if we wish to. Full discussion in, Your Habit Body; An Owner's Manual. Why are we "of two minds"? This is a top bottom split. When we're of two minds, our head nervous system has one point of view. Our gut brain has another, different idea, goal, project or need. When our two nervous systems are not aligned, we are "of two minds." Self-discipline comes down to disciplining our reactivity on multiple levels. We have one visible-physical body. Beyond it, highe in frequency are four more invisible bodies: imaginal, emotional, mental and mythological (PACME). On each of these levels we have habits of reacting. Reactions we practice over time become habits. Habits we perceive working for us are our "comfort zone," the responses easiest for us to give to life's activities. We have a comfort zone on each level PACME. One job Conscious Waking Self has is Comfort Zone Editor, Habit Editor, Behavior Re-writer and Proofreader. Hence, a good use of our spare time, is working on our bad habits.
