In my family we were encouraged to play sports, sing in choirs and join any club or organization we wanted. I was allowed to play basketball and softball. I took piano and mandolin lessons and even a drawing class at the local art center. I wasn't told no when I did things like drag my sisters to the all-but-abandoned "Fire Station Park" for our own version of 'park beautification'.
