Le général de Wrede avait succédé à Demi dans le commande ment en chef du corps auxiliaire. Cet officier, plein d'ambition, me content du maréchal Saint - Cyr, ayant eu aussi a se plaindre, comme beaucoup d'autres, du général Hogeudorp a Wilna, trouva moyen de quitter l'armée. Il allégua, pour excuser ce départ, que le corps bavarois avait subi de telles réductions, que ce commande ment était devenu trop inférieur à son grade, et que sa présence était plutôt nécessaire en Bavière pour accélérer le recrutement et presser le départ des réserves.
