With a book by one of the most prolific writers of musicals, "Robin Hood" was hailed as a "national triumph." Considered the first of the great operettas, it remained popular for over 50 decades and received six Broadway revivals starting in 1900 and ending in 1944. Throughout the 20th century, it was a staple of high school drama departments, making it the first "high school musical." It is also recognized as the first American written operetta, with a score by a single writing team, to be produced in London where it received excellent reviews.
Harry B. Smith was the most prolific of any American stage writer, generating over 6000 lyrics and 300 librettos. He is considered the forefather of today's modern musical.
Published as part of Theatre Arts Press' Historical Libretto Series.
