Excerpt from Rough Recollections of Military Service and Society, Vol. 2 of 2
It has been much the fashion to consider General Havelock as simply a stern Puritan soldier. Stern as a disciplinarian he certainly was, Puritan as regards the purity of his motives and actions he undoubtedly was, - but the writer is glad of this opportunity to bear witness to those gentle and unobtrusive social qualities which endeared him SO much to those who knew him intimately, and rendered him so beloved, even by men who had not otherwise much in common with him. His proselytism was that of example, not of talk. He lived the life, there fore his influence was great.
